Indian flag projected on the Swiss Alps to show hope and solidarity

The Indian flag was projected beautifully on the Matterhorn mountain located in Switzerland, in an initiative to send some “hope and strength to all the Indians”, in wake of the current COVID-19 pandemic. Pictures of the tricolor Indian flag on the famous mountaintop has gone viral on all social media platforms.

As the world is trying to cope with the novel coronavirus, Switzerland has been trying its best to send out hope, love, and empathy to all the countries affected. Switzerland has been illuminating the mountain with daily projections since the end of March.

The famous Swiss light artist Gerry Hofstetter has been lighting up the 4,478-meter pyramidal mountaintop that is situated between Switzerland and Italy with amazing displays of the flags of different countries and sends out a message of hope as a part of a series that supports the countries trying to control the spread of the deadly coronavirus pandemic.


The mountain Matterhorn is a peak of the Alps located between the countries, Switzerland and Italy. It overlooks Zermatt, the Swiss town.

Zermatt Matterhorn, the tourism organization wrote on their official Facebook page: “Being the second-most populous country in the world, India is struggling from the Coronavirus outbreak. There are immense challenges for a country of this size. The projection of the Indian flag on the Matterhorn mountain was intended to express our solidarity and send some hope and strength to all the Indians.”

The Indian embassy to Switzerland, The Holy See and Liechtenstein tweeted from their official Twitter account (@IndiainSwiss), “The Indian Tricolour Flag On The Matterhorn Mountain: Indian Tricolour of over 1000 meters in size was projected on the Matterhorn Mountain, Zermatt, Switzerland to express Solidarity to all Indians who are together in the fight against the Coronavirus crisis. A big thank you to @zermatt_tourism for the gesture.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi retweeted in regard to this gesture by @IndiainSwiss’ with a message: “The world is fighting the COVID-19 together. Humanity will surely overcome this global pandemic.”

The famous Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, appointed as Switzerland’s Tourism ambassador has also shared the picture of this spectacular projection on his official Instagram account @ranveersingh, with the caption: “Switzerland’s most famous mountain - the @zermatt.matterhorn has been lit up in the Indian Tricolour sending a message of solidarity and hope... A tribute to the indomitable human spirit … Light Art presented by @gerryhofstetter …”.

On the platform of Twitter, several people have shared the image and shared the message that the world is together in the battle against the coronavirus.

@nirbhaydubey07 had posted, “India is one of those countries whose national flag was projected on the #Switzerland’s Matterhorn mountain as a mark of hope and solidarity in their fight against the #WuhanVirus. India is one of the highly risked countries where the cases are on the rise since the outbreak started in the country.”

Another twitter user @ianimeshsarkar commented: “A big thank you to #Switzerland for projecting the Indian Tricolour on the Matterhorn mountain and showing our unity in the battle against the Corona crisis. #indiafightscorona.”

When it comes to the Coronavirus in India, as per the statistics of the coronavirus in India as on 18th April, there are 14,792 coronavirus cases in India, with 2,015 people recovered and 488 deaths. There are 2,256,844 confirmed cases of Coronavirus worldwide, 5,71,851 recoveries and 1,54,350 deaths. The novel coronavirus originated in China in the month of November last year.

The national flags of the US, Japan, Spain and France have also been previously displayed on the famous Matterhorn mountain in Switzerland.
