It was in Peterhof that the trial of Naturam Godse, who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi in 1948-49, took place. In 1971, when Himachal Pradesh became a full-fledged state, Peterhof served as Raj Bhavan (governor's residence). The building was destroyed in a fire on the night of January 12, 1981, after which Raj Bhavan was transferred to the Barnes Courthouse. Peterhoff Hotel was rebuilt to a new design as a luxury hotel in 1991. It has 34 suites and is among the most interesting facts about Shimla.
