Located on a ridge under the shadows of the Nanda Devi Range, The Kumaon is a mesmerizing private mountain retreat right in the Himalayan mountains.
The resort has been surrounded by beautiful hills from all sides and the property looks simple and elegant from the outside. There are a total of 10 luxurious suites in the resort that have been built in pairs across five structures that come with a private overlapping terrace in each suite offering beautiful views of the Great Himalayan range.
The main building of the Kumaon has many facilities including a lounge, spa, and a library. There is also a cantilevered dining area with the look of the valley below. The Kumaon has a simple-looking decor and the resort serves the local Kumaoni cuisine. The breakfast at the resort is a range of dishes made with homemade bread and apricot jam that has been prepared locally. The lunch and dinner at the resort include sabzi and roti along with chutney. For dessert, the resort serves an amaranth laddoo and wild sage tea. The kitchen also serves international cuisine, using all the seasonal produce procured from the nearby farms nearby. They especially use the superfoods from the native region such as the black soybean daal rich in protein, bhang chutney made with ground cannabis seeds, and millet flatbreads. These are some of the dishes of the Kumaoni cuisine.
The Kumaon is situated in Kasar Devi. Kasar Devi is a ridge found above the historical city of Almora. Almora has always attracted artists, pilgrims, scholars, and seekers for several centuries. Some of these people include Swami Vivekananda, DH Lawrence, Timothy Leary, and Bob Dylan among others. The region is home to the forests, hidden waterfalls as well as terrace farms.
The Kumaon region is an important place that was also a connecting point for the historical route of India to Tibet. The Kumaon villages have several medieval stone temples which show us that the Kumaoni people have been practicing their culture from a long time ago.
There are a lot of places to visit around the resort. The Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated just 15 minutes from the resort by car. Whereas the Jageshwar temple, an ancient temple complex dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located about 25-30 kms away and it takes only an hour's drive to reach there. The Katarmal Surya Mandir is a temple dedicated to the Sun and is one of three temples that are dedicated to the Sun. The temple is 30 mins from the hotel by car.
The Guests of the Hotel can take a walk around the town and witness the beautiful scenery and traditional agriculture is practiced. Walk through the forests of Oak, Cedar, and Rhododendron to the ancient stone temples. Sitting by the riverside to enjoy the river waters passing by and completely immersing your mind in the beauty of the place. The Kumaon will also offer custom made itineraries to help their guests to explore the nearby places.
The Kumaon's Lower suites have been built using locally-quarried stone mirroring Kumaoni village homes. On the other hand, the upper suites have been built with fly-ash bricks clad with bamboo sticks and copper wire. All of the ten suites have windows from floor-to-ceiling with a view of the valley. There are bay windows in the upper suites that extend to the huge terraces, and the lower suites have an outdoor sitting area surrounded by many fruit trees.
The Suites have the fitting of the traditional wood-burning bukharis, spacious bathrooms, and big lounging spaces.
The dining area has been made in a cantilevered structure of floor-to-ceiling glass and steel and gives an exclusive view of the Himalayas along with the Nanda Devi range. The Nanda Devi range is the second tallest peak of India after Mount Kanchenjunga.
