Top things to do in Bhutan

By Vandita Jadeja | Feb 16, 2018

Bhutan is famous for the high Gross National Happiness ratio which is very endearing. Bhutan attracts curious travelers from across the globe. The colorful country will appeal to you in a strange manner; you will always want to return to the happiest country in the world. Surrounded by a number of mountains, Bhutan is a picturesque destination with a scenic landscape and natural beauty.

Here is my list of top things to do in Bhutan:

1. See Mount Everest: Tourists are attracted to Bhutan for the divine view of the Himalayan range. When you fly into Paro, you will notice spectacular sights of the Himalayan range. Always choose a seat on the left side of the aircraft to actually see the Everest. You will also be able to see Mount Kanchenjunga from the flight. You will be able to view the largest mountains in the world without having to lift a finger.

2. Experience Buddhism: Bhutan is an ideal destination if you want to get away from everyday life. Buddhism is a way of life in Bhutan and you will notice this at every step when you interact with people. If you notice the architecture, you will realize that every home has a shrine or a prayer room. You can also attend a session of meditation at one of the monasteries and get away from the humdrum of everyday life.

3. Enjoy adventure at 23,000 feet: The geographical location of Bhutan makes it an ideal spot for adventure activities like trekking, rafting, biking, hiking and kayaking. The mountains and glaciers make it an exciting venue for tapping your adventurous side. You can plan a number of treks during your trip depending on the difficulty level you seek. Some popular treks include Jomolhari Laya Gasa Trek, Druk Path Trek and Snowman Trek. You can also go on a day hike if you do not have time for an extensive trek.

4. Score a bulls eye: Bhutans national sport is archery and the people are passionate about it. There are stadiums throughout the country, on the hills, across fields and in stadiums. You will find multi colored throngs of men in the traditional robes taking turns to shoot arrows at a tiny target positioned 140m away. Every village in Bhutan has a field for archery; attend the tournaments while you are on your visit there. Try your hand at archery and see how you fare.

5. Dance at a Tsechu festival: The tshechu is the highlight of the year. It is a huge social gathering which is held on the tenth day of any given Tibetan lunar month. It is all about ceremonial dances and is held every spring in Paro Dzongkhag. The highlight of the festival is the Cham dance where monks perform to the traditional music. Every dance has a moral message and it is a lively and colorful event.

6. Enter the Tigers nest: The famous monument in Bhutan, Tigers Nest is 900 meters above the Paro Valley. You will have to arrive on foot but the view across the valley is spectacular. The aura of this place will ensure that this visit is a highlight of your trip.

7. Search for a yeti: The Himalayan kingdom is cut off from the rest of the world but Bhutan is known for its share of myths and legends. The most famous creature is a yeti; Bhutan dedicated a National park for the preservation of the yeti in a remote 740 square mile wilderness. There are slim chances of locating a yeti but the park is home to various endangered species which include snow leopards, red pandas and tigers.

8. Increase your Gross National Happiness: Famous for the quality of life, Bhutan ranks highest in the Gross National Happiness. This is your chance to adapt to a different approach of life where happiness is the ultimate purpose of governance.
