More than three years after Thailand shut down its ecosystem every day, the popular 2000 Maya Bay beach film starring Leonardo DiCaprio reopened. Thousands of tourists were released.
The 100-metre (328-foot) rocky beach is located on Phi Phi Island in the Andaman Sea and is accessible only by boat from nearby places such as Phuket or Phi Phi or mainland Krabi.
In 2018, officials closed the entire Maya Bay to the public, noting that coral reefs and coastal areas were severely affected by flooding. However, since the beginning of this year, some tourists have been allowed to return.
Yudasik Suprasar, director of the Thai Tourism Authority, said the sharks were back. He told Reuters the coral reefs were falling and the water was clear.
"These things show that nature is improving over time and we need to work to preserve it," he said.
For security reasons, 375 tourists will be able to enter at the same time and will not be allowed to swim, officials said. To avoid damage to the coral reef, the boat would only be allowed in the designated area at the western end of the corner, he said.
Before the coronavirus outbreak, tourism was the main driver of about 12 percent of the Thai economy and about 40 percent of 2019 tourist arrivals in 2019.
However, general tourism is destroying the environment in Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia, and tropical beaches are full of pollution and pollution.
"Maya bay is a beautiful and wonderful place," said by Manuele Panin, a 40-year-old Italian tourist who came to the beach.
"I think it's always right to be closer to save nature. It would be best"
