Valles Caldera National Preserve in New Mexico has now been awarded the International Dark Sky Certification. Valles Caldera National Preserve has, quite simply, one of the best night sky experiences one can hope for. The national preserve is known for its stellar experiences and interpretive program based on astronomy. Located in the Jemez Mountains in New Mexico, it is a great destination for stargazing and more.

The certification recognizes Valles Caldera National Preserve as an important dark night sky destination free of light pollution. Additionally, it recognizes the National Preserve as a place that also works on low-consumption, sustainable lighting.



The dormant volcano is a great destination to explore and now, with the approved night sky, it's even more famous. The site is known for its stunning views of the Milky Way, constellations, meteor showers, and even planets. Without light pollution, this place is like a front-row seat for observing celestial objects.

The International Night Sky certification is a step towards public education and aims to improve the energy efficiency of the national park. You can expect events based on astronomy and the night sky here throughout the year.

The site, which was a dormant volcano, last erupted 1.25 million years ago and is now a good place for wildlife activities and adventure. The place can also be visited in the summer months, and you can see a stag in the wild, along with coyotes, black bears, and more.
