Marina Beach

Marina Beach is a 13 km stretch of golden sand. The longest urban beach in the country, the beach is an entertainment hub of the city and is among the top tourist spots in Chennai. The atmosphere is lively with swarms of visitors and vendors creating the carnival atmosphere. An interesting point to note about Marina Beach is that swimming in the water is not legally permitted due to turbulent occult currents. Beyond the waves and sand, Marina Beach is also dotted with many monuments and statues of historical figures.

Kapaleeshwarar Temple

The 7th century Kapaleshwarar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built in the Dravidian style of architecture, the eastern entrance to the temple features an impressive 40-meter-high column with carvings of deities. Within the temple complex, there are many shrines and squares with figures of religious significance, such as the bull, the chariot, and the elephant. Madras Crocodile Bank

If you are a fan of reptiles, Madras Crocodile Bank will not disappoint. Founded in 1976, Madras Crocodile Bank is home to three rare species of crocodiles which are saltwater crocodiles, bandits and gharials. There are also other species present here to bring the number of these reptiles up to nearly 25,000. Other attractions of Madras Crocodile Bank are cobras, albino and water watch lizard.

Fort St. George

One of the best tourist places to visit in Chennai. Built in 1640 by the British East India Company, Fort St. George was the focal point of commercial trading activity. Today it houses the General Secretariat and the Legislative Assembly. Within the boundaries of Fort St. George is the Fort Museum with exhibits of historical artifacts and St. Mary's Church, the oldest Anglican church in the country.

Thousand Lights Mosque

On the list of tourist places in Chennai is the Alf Noor Mosque. A sacred place of worship for followers of Islam, the mosque got its name from the more than 1,000 lights lit in the assembly hall. Bible verses are painted on the walls of this multi-domed mosque. The grounds of the Alf Noor Mosque also contain a library and a cemetery.
