The art of carpet weaving comes from Persia and was not evolved in Kashmir. These carpets are hand made and these are always made using knots. They are never tufted, the more the knots per square inch, the greater will be the value of the carpet as well as the durability. You will find single and double-knotted carpets. Single knotted carpets are fluffier and touch resistant as compared to the double-knotted ones. Normally, silk, wool or silk, and wool yarn are used to make these carpets.

Shahtoosh shawls are banned now as the hair of the Tibetan antelope's throat is collected very painstakingly and these are collected until they have enough to make a shawl.
The silk textile designs are also famous in Kashmir and a wide variety is also available. The popular weaves are known as the 'Chinon' and 'crepe de chine' that are of fine quality and are produced using the silk yarn.
The Sericulture industry is under the supervision of the government of Jammu & Kashmir. The weaving and printing of silk do not take place on a very large scale in the Kashmir valley. The Mulberry cocoon is reared in Jammu and Kashmir which is of superior quality in the whole of Asia. It yields a very fine fiber.
