10 Days Itinerary For Travelling South India

South India is a land of uniqueness and extreme diversity in terms of culture, art and people. It is itself so vast that a handful of days to explore it in entirety will fall short. Following this 10-day itinerary, you can look forward to seeing the best of Tamil Nadu and Kerala by starting from Chennai. At the end of the tour, you will again return to Chennai. Now, let us begin - Day 1 Chennai (Tamil Nadu):You have to reach Chennai to start with this 10-day itinerary for travelling over South India. Now, when you are in Chennai, you would certainly like to explore around the city depending on time permits. The beaches, forests, hills stations, and temples of Chennai beckon travellers from all over the world. There is also a museum of British military garrison and East India Company trading outposts of Madras that you can visit. You may visit Kapaleeshwarar Temple and St. Marys Anglican church of the 17th-century. Day 2 Chennai to Covelong (Kovalam, Tamil Nadu) (38.8km): On the second day of 10 Days Itinerary tour, you can plan to go to the beautiful Kovalam or Covelong Beach in Tamil Nadu. You can take a short tour to visit various places in Chennai during the first half of the day. A quick visit to Kala Kshetra, Memorial of Gandhiji, Mylapore temple and Marina Beach can be completed easily. Since it takes 1 hr 36 min from Chennai to Covelong by car, if you can plan to reach there before sunset, you get ample time to admire the beautiful beach at dusk. Day 4 Covelong to Puducherry (Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu) (114.6 km): Puducherry is a pristine and blissful town that bears the influences of the French colonial culture even today. The journey from Covelong to Puducherry takes around 2 hrs 6 min by car. After reaching Puducherry, you can visit the Matrimandir, Auroville and Aurobindo Ashram during the daytime. And in the evening, you can visit the rooms of Sri Aurobindo and his main disciple Mother. You might want to visit the Puducherry Museum exhibiting Arikamedu, Chola bronze too. Day 5 Puducherry to Thanjavur (Thanjore, Tamil Nadu) (168.5 km): On the fifth day of10 Days Itinerary you can travel to erstwhile Thanjore from Pondicherry. It takes about 4 hrs 9 min to travel to Thanjavur by car. Since there are lots to see in Thanjavur, it is advisable to start early and halt overnight. On reaching, you can see the Thanjuvar Palace and Museum with a library and an art gallery. You can visit the Brihadeshwara Fort. The best part is the world heritage site the magnificent temple built during the Chola dynasty. Day 6 Thanjavur Trichy (Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu) ( 59.0 km) Madurai (Tamil Nadu) (135.0 km): After staying at Tanjore for a day, you can travel to Trichy and then Madurai.It takes about an hour and 15 mins to travel from Thanjavar to Trichy by car. Trichy is an ancient city with great historical significance. You must visit the ancient and beautiful Danish Church and Lord Clives house and the Rock-Fort of Trichy. In addition, there is an ancient Ganapati and Shiva temple that can be reached after ascending 434 steps. After spending a half day at Trichy, take a car to Madurai. It will take your roughly 2 hrs by road and you can reach there right on time for the magnificent Aarti at Madurais famous Meenakshi Temple. Day 7 Madurai Periyar (Thekkady, Kumily, Kerala) (139.2 km): Next day early morning, you can again visit the famous Meenakshi Temple dedicated to Lord Shivas consort. You can also visit the famous Thirumalai Nayak Palace having Indo-Sarahighcenic style and Stucco work on domes and arches. Then pack your bags and travel to Periyar / Thekkady by car. It takes about 3 hrs 21 min to reach Periya in Kerala, the neighbouring state, from Madurai. Day 8 Periyar Kumarakom (Kerala) (131.5 km): The next day, while staying on in Periyar, you must certainly watch the traditional dance performance i.e. Kathakali. Seeing how the artists paint their faces is part of the show that should not be missed. Of course, you must take an early morning boat ride to spot the elephants and avifauna of the Wildlife Sanctuary at Thekkady. During the early hours, the animals come to drink water from the lake. Day 9 Thekkady Alleppey (Kerala) (138 km): On the ninth day of 10 Days Itinerary tour, you must visit Alleppey or Alappuzha. It takes around 4 hrs to travel from Thekkady to Alleppey by car. Alleppey is well-known for the magical backwaters of Kerala. Another name of the backwaters of Kerala is the Venice of the East. You can spend 22 hours floating in a houseboat (Kettuvallam) cruise. You get to experience the natural village life of Kerala from close proximity. And also enjoy the sunset and spend the night in the houseboat itself. All your meals including breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared and served in the Kettuvallam. Day 10 Alleppey Kochi (Cochin, Kerala) (53.0 km) Chennai (693.4 km): On the final day of the tour, you need to head back to Chennai again, via Kochi. Take a car from Alleppey to Kochi and start early, for there are lots to do and see in Kochi. In Kochi, you can visit the famous Dutch Palace at the Mattancherry, except for Sundays and Fridays when its closed. Since the journey from Kochi to Chennai by car takes over 12 hours, it is recommended that you fly to Chennai from Kochi. And from Chennai, you can again take a connecting flight back home.
