Ocean of love! Chennai Couple Gets Married Underwater
"It was a traditional marriage ceremony, only it was underwater," says the groom.
When people think about their dream wedding, it is usually a beautiful and romantic place where the bride and groom wear their best clothes but in recent years, couples have abandoned traditional venues and explored funky and extravagant wedding destinations to celebrate their big day. In one of their fairytale weddings, a Tamil Nadu couple decide to marry underwater to raise awareness about ocean pollution.
In a memorable wedding, software engineers, V Chinnadurai and S Swetha tied the knot 60 feet underwater off the coast of Neelankarai at the crack of dawn on Monday.
Although the groom was a licensed diver, it was his wife's first time in the ocean. When the groom's family suggested an underwater wedding, she was initially skeptical and fearful. In preparation for the adventure wedding, Bride Swetha started a diving course about a month ago.
“I didn’t know how to dive, and I was initially very scared at the idea. But we took lessons for three days, and I overcame my fear. I’m happy at how things turned out,” said Shwetha.
“In the last few years, our ocean has become so polluted with discarded items. Now, used masks have been adding to the problems. So, we’ve been creating awareness on this. I thought when something unique like this is done, it would turn people’s attention to us and we could grab the chance to talk about pollution and the need to do something about it,” Chinnadurai told TOI.
